1899: Man Falls Into Wheel Pit

Middletown, Conn., Feb. 9.–Seeley Birdsey, employed at the factory of Wilcox, Crittenden & Co., had a narrow escape from death this morning. Birdsey was lowered into a wheel pit at the factory to repair the water wheel. The rope broke and the man fell 40 feet into two feet of water. He was severely bruised about the body, but will recover.
