1914: Rector Has Ice Cream in Pulpit to Treat Flock

Middletown, Conn., Aug. 7.–Members of the Maromas Episcopal Church who attended services the hottest July day on record for several years, were rewarded for their faithfulness by their rector, Rev. George B. Gilbert, who at the close of his sermon produced a freezer full of ice cream from his pulpit and invited his hearers to come forward and have a plate.

There were a few gasps of astonishment, but every one accepted. Mr. Gilbert froze the ice cream himself.
